Pool drainage and elevations: review the site before finalizing the design

By ·

A pool layout needs to work with the ground around it.

When I review a pool concept, I compare the proposed pool with the survey and surrounding grades before the design is finalized. A plan can show a well-arranged pool, spa and terrace while leaving an important question unresolved: how will the pool and deck elevations work with the rest of the property?

Look beyond the pool outline

Elevations describe the heights of different parts of the site. Those relationships matter as much as the shape of the pool. If the proposed pool and deck do not align with the site’s drainage and surrounding grades, the deck could end up sloping toward the home or trapping water near the pool.

A rendering helps you understand the appearance of a space. Reviewing it alongside the site information brings the layout and drainage into the same conversation.

Start with the survey and surrounding grades

Bring the available survey, site plan and photographs to the design conversation. Tell the team about places where you have noticed water collecting and any existing features you want to keep.

The aim is to identify conflicts while the layout can still be adjusted. If information is missing or the proposed levels do not fit the site, the next step is to clarify those conditions with the project team before treating the concept as final.

Coordinate the pool, deck and site plan

Pool and deck elevations should be considered together with the site plan before construction. Reviewing these items separately can leave a gap between the pool concept and the way the surrounding space needs to function.

As a homeowner, ask the team:

  • Which survey and site information is the design using?
  • How do the proposed pool and deck levels relate to the surrounding grades?
  • Are there unresolved drainage conflicts near the home or pool?
  • Who will resolve those details before construction begins?

Early coordination gives the team an opportunity to revise the design and drainage details. It can reduce the possibility of demolition, rework and delays later.
